Why Corten Steel for a Fire Pit?

Standard steel fire pits painted or powder coated for protection will eventually chip, flake, and rust through as heat cycles destroy the coating. Corten steel, on the other hand, is designed to rust — and its self-protecting patina actually improves with heat cycling. The fire pit develops a rich, textured surface that gets better every season.

• No paint or coating to maintain or reapply.
• Heat accelerates and deepens the patina finish.
• Wall thickness (typically 3–6mm) ensures structural longevity.
• Welded construction means no fasteners to loosen or corrode.

Shapes & Styles

Corten fire pits are available in a wide range of forms:

• Round bowl: The classic — wide opening for a full fire, looks great from every angle.
• Square or rectangular: Suits contemporary garden designs with clean, geometric lines.
• Cylinder (tall): More contained flame, better for smaller spaces or areas with wind.

Sizing: What to Consider

For a social fire pit that seats 4–6 people comfortably, aim for a diameter or width of 700–900mm. Larger gatherings benefit from 1000mm+. Height should be 300–500mm — enough to contain embers but open enough to appreciate the fire.

Always check your local council regulations regarding open fires and fire pit use, particularly during fire danger periods.

Placement & Safety

• Place on a non-combustible surface — concrete, stone pavers, or compacted gravel. Never directly on timber decking.
• Maintain at least 2–3 metres clearance from structures, fences, and overhanging vegetation.
• Use on calm nights — sparks from open fires can travel in wind.
• Have a bucket of water or hose accessible when burning.
• Never burn treated timber, MDF, pallets, or rubbish — only dry, untreated firewood.

Maintenance

Corten fire pits are genuinely low maintenance:

• Remove ash after each use — accumulated ash retains moisture and can accelerate corrosion at the base.
• Tip the fire pit upside down after use (once cool) if stored through winter to prevent water pooling inside.
• The base will develop small holes over many years of use — this is normal and can be addressed with a steel plate insert or liner.

New vs Weathered Appearance

A new Corten fire pit will look bright and orange initially. After a season of use, it develops a deep, rich chocolate-brown patina that many customers actually prefer. If you want an accelerated weathered look from day one, ask us about pre-weathered finishes.
